Week 3:

W3 Lecture :

This lecture is about the introduction to photoshop and some important tools to know.

Notes :
  • Photoshop provides several tool sets in the Toolbox, and you can expand the tool sets to reveal additional tools.
  • The Lasso Tool allow you to draw and pinpoint specific areas of a document whether to move or edit. It is also splitted into 3 parts ; Lasso, Polygonal Lasso, Magnetic Lasso. Each can be use accordingly depending on the situation.
  • When it comes to actually creating a path from scratch, the pen tool is the most common option as you can determine/adjust where the point will go or end up to.
  • Layers are different images stacked on top of each other. Each layer can be used accordingly without affecting another one to make adjustments.

Tutorial :

Video 1 : ENTER LIFE.

Video 2 : EXIT HOME.

The video above showed on how to use more of photoshop alongside with how to make a good composition for a collage.

Exercise (Practical) :
After doing the physical collage, we were tasked to do digital collage using a set of photos that were given by our tutor. But before that, we were asked to practice the pen tool on Photoshop using a website called The Bézier Game. It has really fun as I get to learn how to shape various objects to get as accurate as I can! There was also an added challenge where we have to use the ideal/least nodes as possible which made it more interesting!

After playing the game for a bit, I finally begin to use Photoshop. I found it quite hard to work with the images we have but that just means expanding my creativity side. Below are my Digital Collage composition with title and a brief description of the idea.

fig 2.1, Composition 1 (14/10/2023)

Title : Colours In the Mind
Description/Ideation : The idea came from the lack of colour in the composition. Most ideas or creativity comes from when you open your mind. The typewriter at the center being the focal point to the coloured fishes and plants is to show that all ideas come from writing/typing it down or even just sketching it down. Once that is done, it shows your idea is coming to life. That’s why it’s colourful.

fig 2.2, Composition 2 (14/10/2023)

Title : Started From The Beginning
Description/Ideation : As the title suggests, the collage shows a modern structure from a very old projector. The leaves act as a pathway to the building just to show how far we have come since the beginning. The background also slowly transitions from just a plain ground to rusty old structures and to a modern finish/structure.

Title : A Flash of the End
Description/Ideation : A human just seconds away from meeting its end. The projector plays the memory as if it already has happened. But what actually happens is that the projector is playing what is most likely the outcome of the situation, death. The white door is to symbolize heaven and possibly the stairway to it. The building flipped upside down is showing above the horizon which indicates an unreachable place, likely heaven.

Reflection :
This was another interesting exercise to test our creativity through limited elements that was provided. I struggled a bit with this
exercise as I was still learning and getting used to Photoshop. Nevertheless, It was still interesting to try and play around with different shapes and elements to see what I could come up with.
