Week 2:
W2 Lecture :
This lecture teaches about Composition Basics, Rules of Third and Golden Ratio.
Notes :
- Good composition consists of design principles such as focal point, scale & hierarchy, balance and white space.
- Rules of thirds is the process
of dividing an image into thirds,
using two horizontal and two
vertical lines. Positioning a subject at the intersecting points helps with producing a more natural image. It is also suggested that any horizon is placed on either the top horizontal line or bottom horizontal line.
- Golden Ratio in design fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
- Golden ratio is also a useful guideline
for determining dimensions of the
layout.
Tutorial :
Video 1 : COMPOSITION STUDIES: COLLAGE
In the video above, I
watched a tutorial on how to start our physical collage. Some important
tips were to try to apply design principles such as hierarchy.
Exercise (Practical) :
In
our next task, we were to begin cutting out elements from magazines or
newspapers to turn into a collage. We were to prepare 3 different
pre-composition before finalizing it into 1 final collage. Below are my 3 pre-compositions for the collage.
For the first composition, I decided to make the base a diamond shape to give it a more interesting form and use some other shapes to form the planets. I also made it so that subject was in a space shuttle spreading all this words.
fig 1.1, Pre-composition 1 (6/10/2023)
For the second composition I decided to use image sizes and reader's visual to my advantage. I first add a very big text on the top, and then add this odd shape leading down to the subject to create a eye-leading poster. The shape also goes along words such as "Who is in control" to show the meaning that we control our own lives to achieve our dreams. The newspaper text on the right side also emphasize on the word brilliant as we need to read a lot to become smart.
Final Outcome :
In the next class, Mr.Fauzi looked at all of our pre-compositions and selected our best ones. After that, I glued together my final composition which is what the image below shows.
I had fun in this exercise! This was an interesting exercise to test our creativity through printed items! I really liked scrolling through the newspaper and magazines while asking myself If I could use that for my composition. After cutting out the elements and experimenting with different composition, I was happy with what I could come out with!
