Instructions

Week 6 : Project 2 Exercise 1

Colour Grading (Production Shoot)
In this exercise, we were to shoot 7 scenes from the movie "Everything Everywhere All At Once". Our class split into 3 groups with 10 people in each. We each had our own role for the entire duration of the shooting. After shooting the video, we were then to edit in a movie trailer style with colour grading.

Initial Planning & Behind the Scene Shooting (BTS) :
The first thing my group did is prepare a task delegation table so that it would be easier to see which members needs  to do which task.

Next thing our group did was plan out the different props, costumes and makeup that we have that will be able to be used for the video shooting.

On the day of shooting, we had tons of fun shooting although with a tight time limit! The short video below shows a timelapse of the first few scenes we shot.

Editing & Colour Grading :
After shooting, now it was time for editing! I first imported the clips and sync it with manually with each other.

Then I begin doing colour correcting. I used the left image as seen in fig 1.5 as my reference to colour and based every other scenes around that.

Fig 1.5, Colour Correcting (8/6/2024)

For one of the scenes, we needed to shoot it slow and then speed it up in the editing. In the editing, I tried to make it seem as natural as possible without making the speedup too obvious. Another factor was still making the audio sync up with the clips, so there was some cuts done in the audio portion.

After adjusting the clips to the way I wanted, now begins the biggest editing part. Doing the colour grading as well as editing to a movie trailer. I first begin by choosing a music to be used in the background. I decided on Cinematic Dramatic Neo Classic by Infraction. Afterwards it was arranging the clips and making it sync with the music.

Next, it was colour grading. There was 6 different colour scheme we needed to implement and that is Teal & Orange, Bluish (cold), Greenish (cold), Brownish (warm), Desaturation and Black & White. Below shows some of the colour grading done on some of the scenes.

Week 7 : Project 2 Exercise 2

TikTok/Instagram Video
In this exercise, we needed to shoot a vertical instagram/TikTok video. We needed to take inspiration from current trending reels and then incorporate our own creative ideas into it. Then, we needed to shoot the video according to the proposal.

Proposal :
For my idea, I decided to take the topic "procrastination" from another reel I saw and make it based on how I procrastinate in my daily life. The slides below show my proposal which contains my idea, music of choice and storyboard of how the video would be shot.

Shooting :
During my video shooting day, I had lots of fun shooting different variety of scenes. Some scene I shot needed a difficult angle to capture (Examples in fig 2.2 and fig 2.3) but through some creative methods, I think I managed to pull it off in the end! Fig 2.4 shows all the clips from the 2 days of recording.

Video Editing Process :
After selecting all the scenes that I'll be using, It was time to edit them together. All of the selected scenes ended with around 38 minutes in total and I needed to make the video in about 1 minute, so lots of cuttings needed to be made. I begin by simply importing all the clips in order and syncing the audio that I recorded for some of the scenes.

Below shows my first draft for the edited video. I also made sure the manually adjust each scene's volume to be equal.

After showing the edit to Mr.Martin, he pointed out that there is a structure but still requires additional editing such as subtitle, colour grading and smoother transitions. With that in mind, I continue to edit the video even further. My first approach was adding subtitle for the video. In some part of the edit, I also add a simple description of what is happening in the scene to make the video easier to follow.

Fig 2.9, Adding Subtitles (24/6/2024)

Then for a particular scene, I added a simple fade transition to make the video more engaging to watch.

Fig 2.10, Adding Transitions (24/6/2024)

Since my video had a couple of jumpcuts, I ensured the song I chosen syncs up well the cuts. To achieve this, I ensure to use the song's waveform as a guide.

After rechecking the clips to everything is fine, I begin colour grading the video. For night shots, I went for a cooler tone while afternoon remains a warm tone.

For another specific scene, I wanted to emphasize on the late time, so I made a simple edit where it zooms in on the time. I also made it quickly turn black and white to show that the protagonist has messed up and wasted the entire day.

Feedback

Week 9
Tiktok/Instagram Video :
The structure for the video is there. You could add colour grading to the video to enhance the video more. The edits between transitions also could be more smoother. You can try trimming the video a bit more too.

Reflection

Week 6
Colour Grading (Production Shoot) :

The whole process of recording and editing was quite fun! It was a great learning experience on what people do on a film set and the difference roles we all had. As the main actor of the video shoot, I must admit that it was pretty tiring but I still enjoyed it! Because we lacked time, I do wish that some of the shots were redone because I felt that I could've acted better. When it comes to the editing portion, the most challenging part was just trying to find a music for the video. After that, it was all pretty straightforward! There was certainly some experimenting on the colour correcting and grading but after finding the right tone, it was smooth sailing. Even with the limited 7 clips, I tried experimenting to create a short yet simple storyline and I liked how it turned out! Overall, it was an exciting task from the video shooting to the editing and so far the most enjoyable exercise!

Week 7
TikTok/Instagram Video :
I had a blast doing this project! I have never seen the appeal of doing short videos before this but after making this video, I can finally see the appeal to them! The hardest part of the video as definitely coming up with the concept/idea of the video, but after deciding on the video, it went really smoothly! While shooting the video, I remember looking back many times to my storyboard to see if I shot the scene as I initially planned. It just taught me how important it is to have a storyboard when shooting videos. Some of the shots weren't particularly easy to take either, such as me sleeping on the bed, but I did manage to come up with creative ways to shoot it. As for the editing portion, I think it ended up as well as I planned it in my head. There were definitely some edits that I decided only during editing, but I think it made it more engaging to watch! All and all, an extremely fun project to plan, shoot and edit! It was an experience that I really enjoy and would gladly do again!
