3 Favourite Stop Motion Short
Below are stop motion shorts I found really well done and rather unique! The first one by far being the most memorable and thus my favourite as it is one of the few videos that I watched when I was still new to Youtube!

fig 1.1, Western Spaghetti by PES | The FIRST Stop-Motion Cooking Film

I like this stop motion because it is so well executed in terms of the transition and the smoothness of the animation. It also feels very unique because it uses a variety of objects to bring the looks of a spaghetti to life! There are also so much small details such as the fire movement that makes the stop motion seem very realistic. The choices of camera angles are well made too! It makes it all seem so natural yet it isn't!

fig 1.2, Chairbending: Stop Motion Short

This stop motion is more simple but I really love the idea and the execution of it! Clearly a reference from Avatar but now they're chairbending! The stop motion really makes it seem that they have such powers and them fighting each other to see who's better is really fun and entertaining.

fig 1.3, BENCH - STOP MOTION ANIMATED SHORT FILM

This stop motion uses clay as their main medium and it's impressively well made. The first thing I noticed in the stop motion was the chewing animation. It is so bouncy and consistent! The other character movement was also equally well made. I also appreciate the smaller details such as the crumbs and eye blinking animation. The plot twist in the end is what makes the animation so memorable in my opinion, I really expected a wholesome ending but what actually happens is way more entertaining!

Stop Motion
For our final project, we needed to create a 30 second (for one person) stop motion following a theme of our choice. The medium of the stop motion is our choice and the final video should also be edited with music and sound effects.

Planning :
After thinking about it, I have decided to go solo for this stop motion as I like working on things alone. As for the medium of the stop motion, I decided on papercut as it was the cheapest option and also because I have a little experience from shooting one a week before.

After discussing with Mr.Martin with some changes based on feedback, the proposal for the idea (fig 1.3) and storyboard can be seen below (fig 1.1 & fig 1.2).

Shooting :
I then begin cutting out the paper cutouts and started filming the stop motion based on my storyboard. There were some shots than required a re-shoot as I wasn't happy with them. The images below show some of the photos I took while shooting from home.

Editing :
Next was the editing phase. First, I adjusted the some of the settings based on the slides that Mr.Martin give. Then I started deleting some unnecessary frame that felt a bit too extra. Afterwards, I compile all the images into several scene based on the different shots I have.

Here, I started adding some fade transitions and added a simple ending with text.

I also did some colour correcting on the first shot by setting the colour temperature based on the time the clock showed. This is to give a sense of change. I also change the speed of this scene as it was moving a bit too fast.

For some of the scene, I also added a zoom in and blur effect to enhance the feeling and engagement of the video.

Next was sound editing! On fig 3.5, I moved a part of the clock timelapse earlier in the video to enhance the understanding even more on the video. I added sound effects and then layers with other sounds too. I also added some ambient sound to make it feel more realistic. Audio fade elements were also used on some parts.

Feedback

Week 11

The idea is fine but it is boring. Instead, try adding some excitement to the animation so it would be more interesting and enjoyable to watch.

Week 12
Most of your storyboard is fine but change the first 2 scenes from the person walking inside to the person already playing for a long time. It could be a short timelapse of day and night and I could use different lighting to show the mood of the time.

Reflection

Stop Motion
This project was definitely the most challenging project in the entire module. The project proved to me how difficult it was to do a stop motion animation. The most time I spent in this project has to go to the paper cutouts. I spent a solid 3 days measuring, drawing and cutting the cutouts. It was pretty rough. Doing the stop motion wasn't any easier. Even finding a place to shoot the stop motion was hard. Since I used a ring light, I needed to find a way to position it above my phone. I did however ended up finding a creative way to position it. During the shooting, I wasn't happy with how some of the scenes were shot, so I needed to re-shot them too. When editing the video, it went smoothly as I have learned a lot from past exercises and projects! Overall, while there were some minor bumps here and there, I am pleased with how it turned out! It was interesting exploring and experimenting on stop motion!
