ReflectionDoing these exercises has helped me better understand my selected game better and it was very fascinating! Studying props/assets design in a game has made me realize how simple the props can be simplified and then expanded if needed. Knowing this, it definitely helped when doing my form exploration. Rendering and texturing was on the other hand was fairly straightforward although it was time consuming.

Lectures
Week 1
On the first week, Mr.Kannan introduced us to what is to be expected in the entire duration of Game Art Module.
Week 2
On the second week, Mr.Kannan jumped into explaining the process and flow of how we are to progress in our work. There were many important aspects touched on such as a play/battle area, simple shapes to be expanded on, having a moodboard for inspiration and having different concept art to explore different possibilities.

Week 3
This week, Mr.Kannan explains about how having and art direction and understanding game requirement is important to ensure consistency throughout the development process. Some tips he gave while concepting was to start drawing loose and then only refining it. Different techniques should also be explored when concepting such as photobashing or even traditional colouring. Shape language is also important as there is where you can make your drawings more expressive.

Week 4
In week 4, Mr. Kannan thought us the basics of blender. We learned on making different shapes and different shortcuts for tools. He also touched on the importance of understanding what a vertex, edge and plane. As 3D modelling is complicated knowing what tri and quads were important too.

Week 5
In week 5, Mr.Kannan shows the importance of functionality when it comes to designing props. There was also a demo on using Unreal Engine showcasing what you can do and how it works.

Week 6
On week 6, Mr. Kannan simply touched on understanding your prop materials and how importance it is to have an art approach when it comes to designing your props.

In exercises, we were to explore on concepting modular prop and asset design for our selected game world. This exercise tasks serve as practice to master the fundamentals of visual design.
Firstly, I had to select a game. My game of choice was Split Fiction which was the most recent story-based game that I have played and the most I can remember in terms of gameplay mechanics and world-building.
I first looked into understanding the shape of the character and props/asset designs. I simplified it by making a silhouette over it and then drew simple square and circle shapes to study the design. From this, it can be understood that the designs seem to mostly use these 2 shapes as their shape language.

Then I did some simple form exploration for modular props. I looked through sci-fi props and tried to match the style of it.

Afterwards, I did texturing and rendering for the props. I took 2 props from the previous sketch and then render and textured it. Another simple create prop was also added and given the same treatment.

For the environment, I made a sketch as shown below. The idea behind it is that it is an extension to the game's chapter one where the world would be in a high up skyscraper.

There are more ideations to showcase, but as project 1 and exercises are somewhat related, it would be showcased and further explained in the project 1's post.
