Lectures
Week 10 :

Notes :

  • Having 2 frames instead of 1 helps communicate the story better and shows continuity.
  • Gestalt Law Of Closure suggests that objects grouped together are seen as a whole. Our minds tend complete an image if we something recognizable even if the image isn't complete.
  • Scott McLoud’s transition consists of 6 transitions which are :
    • Moment to Moment (A single action portrayed in a series of moments)
    • Action to Action (A single subject in a series of actions)
    • Subject to Subject (A series of changing subjects within a single scene)
    • Scene to Scene (Transitions across significant distances of time and/or space)
    • Aspect to Aspect (Transitions from one aspect of a place, idea or mood to another)
    • Non Sequitur (Not touched upon. No logical relationship between either side of the transition/image)
  • By clearing showing a point of view in a story, it allows for people to be able to tell the story/narrative.

Class Summary :
In this week's class, Mr.Hafiz brief on the next assignment which was Digital Triptych where we explored on
Scott McLoud’s transition. He went into detail about how we would to create the before and after scene while going about what makes for a good and smooth transition. 5 of the Scott McLoud’s transition were elaborated which has it's own uniqueness to it.

Week 11 :
Class Summary :
This week's was a physical class where Mr.Hafiz just checked our progress before the submission

Digital Triptych

Task 3 :
For this assignment, we were given only 1 week in the assignment since it was fairly simple. Continuation from our last assignment, we were to make an illustration for the before and after of our urban legend with our climatic moment gif to complement it. We also needed to utilize Scott McLoud’s transition in this assignment.

Research
First, I decided do some research about triptych. The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch is one good example/reference for this assignment as it shows a form of progression. From my understanding, this triptych is progression about human recreation from one sin to another.

Next I decided to choose a transition from one of Scott McLoud’s transitions. The transition I went for was Action to Action as I found the transition to be really fitting with my idea. So I then begin sketching out my idea.

Ideation
For each of the panels, I decided to use the same composition with different actions happening as it makes understanding the narrative easier and it also highlights the actions happening in each scene.

Before Panel :
To create an action to action transition, I decided to create a feeling of something is about to happen by first choosing a main subject for something to happen. So the train was certainly that chosen subject. I sketched out the scene where the train light was the highlight of the scene followed by the girl standing next to lamppost. The protagonist is also just minding her own business on a seemingly normal day.

During Panel : In this scene, suddenly the train going by has sliced the girl waiting in half where she no longer has a lower body and becomes a ghost ("Teke Teke"). The highlight of this scene now is now drawn by the ghost with its sharp scythe and the feeling of concern for the protagonist. This creates the feeling of suspension.

After Panel : In this scene, the unfortunate outcome of the scenario happens and so I sketched out the protagonist being brutally murdered by the ghost with her body being sliced in half. The ghost seems to be missing as it can be assumed that its finding its next victim.

After receiving feedback from Mr.Hafiz, he said that the idea was good so I moved on with illustrating it.

Illustrating

Then it came time to illustrate my sketches/idea. First I made a before, during and after draft and remove/add elements that weren't necessary so I can get a rough idea about the panel transitions.

In the first (before) panel, I moved the girl next to the lamppost and added the headlight for the train. I also added grain to the light.

Then working on the third panel (after), I begin adjusting the blood so it looks like its spilling on the road.

Fig 2.3, Readjusting Blood (3/12/2023)

For the protagonist's blood, I added some splatter on the building with a big puddle on the sidewalk and ground. It was quite hard ensuring the perspective of the blood didn't seem off.

Then I went back to reworking on the trail of the blood. I have also added the hand marks on the road.

I then illustrated the lower body of the protagonist, adding blood, shadow and also grain.

Some additional feedback I got from Mr.Hafiz was that some parts didn't have that art deco style, the nose and buildings behind seem especially off. So I readjusted the nose for both characters and also recoloured the background buildings. I also added shadow to the moon.

Reflection
Doing this assignment made me understand and appreciate just how important each frame is especially if it is to tell a story. Creating 2 additional frames to showcase the before and after of my editorial illustration was a excellent way to tell a story, it taught me how to illustrate a story with only limited amount of frames. Planning out the triptych was probably the hardest and stressful part as it will determine how well you can tell your story in 3 frames. But other than that, executing the illustration was pretty straight forward. Overall it was an interesting assignment to understand simple storyboarding and show how well you can communicate your story through limited visuals.
