Task 2 : Proposal
Continuing from our last task, now we need to choose our final art direction and start building based on that. The outcome for this task is to complete most of the design before task 3, which would then be close final.

After a group discussion session, we then finally decide on theme of the board game, which is candy-themed. The simple rationale behind this is because glucose is a primary component of sugar in candy.

As we also haven't played the game yet, we asked Mr. Shamsul for the game so that we could see how the game flows. Fig 1.1 shows us trying the game out.

Before we played, we also took the time to count the components so we could plan ahead when making each components. One thing that I noticed immediately when started playing was that I had no idea what each of the cards I had do, which means I need to refer to the manual just to use a card. A simple description on the card would have been useful in this case. Throughout the game, we also played the game some parts incorrectly but went with it because it was our first time playing it. After playing it though, I did find the game really fun and enjoyable!

Next, we got to work with our designs. My part was the board design so I worked on the layout first. During one of the discussion, my group member, Hanson had a great idea of making the board detachable, so I experimented on that idea first. I then chose the idea going forward because it was a really good idea in terms of packaging and flexibility/modularity.

After getting approval from our lecture, I continue working on the design of the board. Since it was candy themed, the icons for each sections should be somewhat representative of candy too. Fig 2.4 shows my references I use for each icon while fig 2.5 the board with the candy-themed icons.

Unfortunately for me, the design did not get approved, more specifically for the icons as they are too complicated and lacked consistency. So I passed it over to my group member Hanson to redo it. While he worked on that, I worked on his draft for the card designs. Below (fig 3.1) are his current card design draft. My task was to put our mascot character by Felicia (fig 3.2) and make them to the card design. The idea behind the mascot was a simple candy corn inspiration.

Below shows the first 2 cards that I designed along with the short descriptions for each cards.

As I was a bit slow with the card design, Hanson took over for a bit and experimented more on the card designs which can be seen below. We also consulted our lecturer about the current design, and he emphasized on artstyle consistency.

From Hanson's new designs, I then continued reworking on it to fit my artstyle (fig 3.5 & 3.6).

After showing the design to my group members, we all agreed that the character should be in one form, which is its chibi form (small-sized, simple and cute character). The current shield card is an example of it's more natural form, so I needed to change that.

Fig 3.6 shows the almost completed design for the character. Now it's just the colouring which is done below (fig 3.7).

After a feedback session, our other lecturer, Ms Anis pointed out that the character colour was a bit complicated so we then changed it to the one below (fig 3.8). The reason behind this colour was because it's a mage/witch character and purple colour are common among these kinds of character.

Feedback
Week 6 : A bit too complicated, try to make it more easy and simple (Monopoly, Nickelodeon, Nintendo) Right now, there is too many elements in the logo to make it stand out. Keep it simple but unique.

Week 7 : No Class.

Week 8 : At the moment, art direction is a mess. Please do make it consistent. The logo design is little bland, could make it more unique. The board game layout is good and you can proceed with that idea. The character/mascot that you currently have can we used throughout the game such as in the roulette/Spinner design.

Week 9 : For the card design, the art direction seems mixed at the moment. Stick to one style and make it consistent for each of the cards.

Week 10 : The board design is fine for most parts except the icons. They are a little too complicated, try to make it more simple. Remove the outline for the text too. For the card designs, the colour is a little too complicated and it doesn't stand out, switch to something simpler.

This second task was certainly more exciting as we begin designing the elements for the board game. The hardest challenge here was definitely trying to fit everything into one artstyle. And while this isn't final yet, there is still many changes we can make at the moment to better match the theme as while as the style we aim for. One big change we need to do here is definitely keep the line stroke consistent. Currently as it stands, the line mixes from being thick and thin. In terms of doing the illustrations on the card and the board design, it was very fun making them into my vision of the board game as the leader for the art direction. Although that comes with a sacrifice of me doing most the illustrations and guiding my team regarding any illustrations made. I must admit I didn't say much at this stage as we have been barely making deadlines. I will certainly improve on this by making sure everything gets my style approval before the final design gets printed. Overall, our progress for task 2 have been good and I am happy with how much we have progressed. Moving forward from this, I hope to have the board game completed with very consistent art direction.
