Task 2 (Visual Analysis)
Module Information Booklet :
1. Task 2 Brief Recap
In this task, I needed to take the artwork that I have selected from task 1 and do a detailed analysis on it. I will also need to go in depth about design principle used as well as the purpose of the artwork and how it relates to the UNSDG goal.
2. Visual Analysis
As briefed about in the lecture, visual analysis are separated into 3 phases, Observation, Analysis and Interpretation.
Selected Design :
"Free everywhere"
Phase 1 : Observation
The design work is in a square format. In the bottom right, a girl is standing on the side of the building. On the top, a moon can be seen shining brightly in the sky. On the left, a bright yellow light is shining on the subject which casts an eagle shadow on the right wall. On the left, words can be seen on the boards as well as on the road. In visual elements, the main colours are blue, orange, white and black with straight and some organic lines. There is also a spray texture to the entire design.

Phase 2 : Analysis
The design work is asymmetrical balance where the left side seems heavy in elements but the right side has a good amount of elements that makes it seem balanced. Contrast can also be seen as the dull blue and black colour get outweigh by the bright orange and yellow words together with the subject. The light shining at the subject also creates emphasis as it highlights the main attraction of the illustration. Movement can also been seen through the direction the words are written which then leads to the subject standing gracefully. The straight and organic lines work really well with the dull and vibrant colour to create unity.

Phase 3 : Interpretation
Image B : "Beauty in every body" (2021)

The design shows a winning Illustration for an event by Un Women for a vision of a gender equal future (What does gender equality look like?, 2021). In my findings, the style that fits the illustrations the best (Image A & B) is called "Textured Character Illustrations" (Enchev, 2021) which can be seen throughout each artwork. This artist likes to draw women as the her main subject and also supports feminism. Additionally, the artist likes adding typography in her works which give it a more impactful and expressive meaning. The reason she created this artwork was to raise awareness of gender equality and how it is a problem. She as a Mexican always hear phrases that warns the danger about women going outside (Lagunas, 2021) and this illustration is to send a message where she wishes women could be free.

Weekly Feedback :
Week 4 :
Highlight the design principle in phase 2. I need to do more research on the art style of the selected design as Art Deco is definitely not the art style. Can reconsider on selecting Image A to also contain typography for the description. Could say on how the artist likes drawing girl as the main character. You could add on the type of medium used to make the artwork. In further readings, you don't need to explain what you learned, just the links to it will do.
Week 5 :
The other artist's artwork can be put in further readings to not confuse the reference section. Don't forget to add APA referencing inside the phase 3 paragraph as well. Make sure the add the total word count. You could also add in a few more keywords but overall it looks fine just finish the remaining and you can submit.

Self-Reflection :
This task has been very straight to the point. Analysing my chosen artwork was certainly more interesting than I thought. I never knew there was layers/tiers when it comes to visually analysing a piece. Nevertheless, I had fun exploring more about the piece I selected and the artist behind it too! While the first 2 phases of the visual analysis are very simple and straightforward, I found the 3 phase to be quite a challenge as I need to do lots of research on the artist to fully grasp her style and the message she is trying to convey in each artwork. But other than that hurdle, it was still a enjoyable task to do!
