Information Design | Final Project
03.02.2025 - 23.03.2025 || Week 1 - Week 7
ReflectionExperience
Throughout this final project, it has been an fun to work as a group of 10 to work on a single project. However I must say, that the division into work has been quite difficult especially with this much people in a group. With that being said, I am happy with how my group handled the splitting of our work.

Final Outcome :
3. Feedback
4. Reflection
For our final project, we were tasked as a group to make an Infographic Video Animation to present information such as below :
1. Creating awareness (such as Global Warming, Recycle, etc.)
2. Explaining a process (such as "how to" video)
3. Defining a concept (such as "What is Fast Fashion", "What is Color Wheel", etc.)
In the project, we should also consider organization principles such as LATCH and content organization. Animation principles and principles of visualization should also be considered for the video.
Process
Choosing a Topic
In the first week, we needed to form a group in class and afterwards we got to discussing. Firstly we discussed on what topic from the 3 do we want to go for.
fig 1.1, Topic Voting (8/2/2025)
From the vote, Explaning A Process won so next we begin on discussing what kind of topics do we want to go for. Below is the list of ideas that we came up with.
- How to recycle crayons
- How a seed grows into a tree
- How to make handmade soaps
- How caterpillars transform into a butterfly
- How volcano erupts
- How a virus spreads
- How to make mungbean cake
- How animation productions work
- How to conduct the scientific method
- How to make user-centered designs
From the list, we all agreed that the mungbean cake one was the most interesting one. So we went with that. However after further discussion, it seems that mungbean isn't a big thing so it has quite a limited data. Because of that, we have decided to switched to making a mooncake as it looks similar. Mooncake also has a big history from long ago, so it is sure to have interesting story and element to it. After discussing with Mr.Fauzi, he also advices us on looking at bad infographics so that we have a benchmark and improve upon it.
Making the Slides
For the flip presentation, we have decided to split our workload as below. Our flip presentation is also on the final week of the sem. So in that week, we would need to also showcase the pre-production as well as the production of the animated infographic.
Work distribution for the slides :
- Introduction - Tristan
- What is a mooncake? - Shao Han
- History of mooncake - Wu Ziyang
- Why mooncakes - Yong
- Target audience - Sheryne
- Mooncake festival/ mooncake story - Wangyifan
- Mooncake video we want to make infographic animation of -Yang jiayi
- Make infographic with info extraction from mooncake video - Velicia
- Style references - Zhang
- Ending statement - Tristan
- Bibliography - Yong
Below shows the slides that I did.

Making the Script, Storyboard and Voiceover
After finishing the slides, we then distributed our task into the more technical stuff. Our work distribution looked like this :
Script : Tristan, Zhang
Voice-over : Yong
Storyboard : Sheryne, Ziyang
Animation : Yang Jiayi, Shao Han, Velicia
Editor/Sound Effects : Wang Yifan
First, the script part was put into full action. The 2 members worked together on the script and produced what is shown below (This also includes changes that has been discussed and done over the group) :

Following the script, another member worked on the storyboard which can be seen below.

Then, it was my turn to work on the voiceover. I recorded using my phone while it was connected with a microphone. I also used my earphones to hear how audible I am in the recordings. It was my first time doing anything voice related, and hearing myself through my earphones while recording is kind of surreal. Below shows my recording setup.
There were many takes when recording this as I tend to speak a bit to fast. But after getting the pacing right, it was just a matter of pronunciation which I did mess up a few times. Then I worked on combining the audio clips into 1. Here I also adjusted some clips where its audio was higher than some. Some minor cuts were also done so that the flow was consistent.

Then I passed it over to the next members for the illustration, animation and editing. Next part will showcase the final outcome of our work.

Feedback
Week 4 :
Since this is not an illustration class, work smart, you could save time and just use an already made asset or drawing. You don't need to animate it, instead use motion graphics so that it would be easier. Next you can work on your script which then you can estimate on how long the video would be. The script can then be turned into a storyboard. Make sure don't make too much information too in the script too. Keep it short and concise as it should be easy to understand.
Week 6 :
To emphasize the chart, you can make the chart bigger and make the ingredients of scene smaller. You should also consider changing some voiceovers for some scene as it may be too long. When you animate using After Effects, render each scene separately instead of doing it in 1 project file. Then you can just clip together the renders in your video editing software. When animating the video, also consider highlight key words so that it makes your video feel more engaging.
Week 7 :
The illustration is good if you can pull it off, but if you can't, considering making it more simple. You should also focus on basic animations in your video such as fading in, fading out and scaling.
Reflection
Throughout this final project, it has been an fun to work as a group of 10 to work on a single project. However I must say, that the division into work has been quite difficult especially with this much people in a group. With that being said, I am happy with how my group handled the splitting of our work.
My part for the project was a part of the slides and also to do the voiceover of the video. While I didn't really enjoy doing my part in the slides because I don't like doing presentation slides, I really enjoyed doing the voiceover part of the project. While doing the voiceovers, I have learned to talk in a consistent pace and not too fast. I also needed to talk clearly so that viewers can understand the video easily without needing to rewind. Overall, a good group project experience that is executed well in my opinion.
Observation
Through observing other group's flip presentation, it was really fascinating to see other people's topic and ideas! From other people's presentation, I also gathered that while having a lot of information is good, we need to be careful with how much information that we can only put as the video can only reach up to 3 minutes.
Findings
Throughout the 7 weeks, I have learned that while having lots of information if generally fine, it is important to only show the important points when designing. This is so that the design will look cohesive and not too messy. Another thing to keep in mind is that designing is not about just making things look good but rather to solve issues and problems.
